Instead of using surgery, heat or multiple injections, VenaSeal™ uses a small amount of a special medical adhesive—often called “medical glue”—to seal the problem vein. Once the vein is closed, your body naturally redirects blood through healthier veins. Over time, this helps reduce symptoms such as heaviness, aching, and swelling, and the appearance of varicose veins gradually improves.

Why It’s Done

VenaSeal™ helps:

  • Treat larger varicose veins that cause heaviness, aching, swelling, or fatigue in the legs.
  • Improve appearance and relieve discomfort.
  • Provide an alternative to other procedures — without the need for general anesthesia or compression stockings (in most cases).

How the Procedure Works

  • A small catheter (thin tube) is inserted into the affected vein under ultrasound guidance.
  • A small amount of medical-grade adhesive is delivered along the vein.
  • The vein walls are gently pressed together for a few seconds to help them seal.
  • Once closed, the body naturally reroutes blood flow to healthy veins.

The procedure usually takes 45-75 minutes and is done in an office setting.

After the Procedure

  • You can walk immediately and return to normal activities the same day.
  • No heat or general anesthesia is used, so recovery is quick and comfortable.
  • Compression stockings are usually not required.
  • Mild tenderness or tightness may occur for a few days.

Benefits

  • Quick, comfortable, and effective treatment
  • Little to no downtime
  • No need for multiple needle sticks or general anesthesia
  • Most patients experience immediate symptom relief

Possible Side Effects

Most are mild and temporary:

  • Local tenderness or redness at the treatment site
  • Mild inflammation (phlebitis)
  • Rarely, allergic reaction or vein reopening

When It May Not Be Recommended

  • If you have an active infection or vein clot
  • If you’re allergic to the adhesive
  • During pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • In cases of very large or tortuous veins (alternative treatments may be suggested)

Results

  • Treated veins are permanently sealed and gradually reabsorbed by the body.
  • Most patients notice improvement in leg symptoms and appearance within 1–2 weeks.
  • Results are long-lasting, with high satisfaction and success rates in studies.

VenaSeal

What is VenaSeal™?

VenaSeal™ is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a special medical adhesive (“vein glue”) to seal diseased veins in the leg.
Once the vein is closed, blood naturally reroutes through healthy veins, reducing symptoms and improving leg appearance.

How does VenaSeal™ work?

During the procedure, your vein specialist uses ultrasound guidance to insert a tiny catheter into the affected vein.
A small amount of medical-grade adhesive is delivered along the vein’s length to seal it shut — without the need for heat, general anesthesia, or multiple needle sticks.

What are the benefits of VenaSeal™?

  • No heat or risk of thermal injury
  • No need for general anesthesia
  • Minimal bruising or discomfort
  • Quick recovery — return to normal activities immediately
  • No need for post-treatment compression stockings in most cases

Is VenaSeal™ painful?

Most patients feel little to no pain. You may feel slight pressure or mild pulling as the catheter is positioned, but the procedure is generally very comfortable.

How long does the procedure take?

A typical VenaSeal™ treatment takes 45–75 minutes and is performed right in the clinic under local anesthesia.

What should I expect after treatment?

  • You can walk immediately after the procedure.
  • Most patients return to normal activities the same day.
  • Some mild tenderness or tightness may occur along the treated vein for a few days.
  • Compression stockings are usually not required (unless your provider advises otherwise).

When will I see results?

Many patients notice improvement in leg symptoms (heaviness, aching, swelling) within days. Visible veins may take a few weeks to fade as the body reabsorbs them.

Is VenaSeal™ permanent?

Yes. Once a treated vein is sealed, it stays closed permanently. However, new veins can develop over time due to vein disease progression, which can also be treated.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are rare and typically mild.

They may include:

  • Mild tenderness or inflammation along the treated vein
  • Temporary redness or itching
  • Rarely, a small area of phlebitis (vein inflammation)
  • Severe allergic reactions or deep vein clots are very uncommon.

Who is a good candidate for VenaSeal™?

VenaSeal™ is ideal for patients with:

  • Varicose veins caused by great or small saphenous vein reflux
  • Leg symptoms like heaviness, swelling, fatigue, or cramps
  • Active lifestyles seeking quick recovery and minimal downtime

Your vein specialist will confirm suitability using an ultrasound evaluation.

Is VenaSeal™ covered by insurance?

No, VenaSeal™ is not covered by provincial health plans or private insurance. Your doctor will review the treatment cost and payment options with you before the procedure.

Can I drive or work after my appointment?

Yes! Most patients drive home and resume work the same day.

How many treatments will I need?

Most patients need only one session per affected vein, though additional veins can be treated in separate appointments if necessary.
